Das Aufgehen eines Ganzen in ein anderes – Teile wie Federn oder Nägel können dabei übrigbleiben – heißt Metabolismus. Solange der Metabolismus nicht auf die Mengenlehre reduzierbar ist, bleibt die Mereologie unabhängig von der Mengenlehre.

A whole’s being annihilated into another is called metabolism. Parts of the annihilated whole can be preserved, e.g. nails or feathers.

As long as metabolism is not reduced to set theory, the notions of the whole and the part will not be reducible to the notion of element.
