The summer gave and the summer has taken away

Noch eine eigene Übersetzung. Es ist Sommer, es ist vorbei. Odysseas Elytis (Literaturnobelpreis 1979), Alles mit dem Sommer hinweggerafft, aus dem Zyklus Die Rhos des Eros (1973):

ALLES MIT DEM SOMMER HINWEGGERAFFT

Alles mit dem Sommer hinweggerafft:

zerzaustes Haar an den Meereswellen;

Termin um eins, uns zu gesellen.

Alles mit dem Sommer hinweggerafft:

die schwarzen Augen, am Hals ein Tuch,

und die Kapelle mit dem Gebetsbuch.

Alles mit dem Sommer hinweggerafft:

die halben Worte, die verschluckten;

die Bootssegel, die missglückten.

In Schaum und Spritzern und Meeresalgen

raffte er alles hinweg und fegte

den Schwur, der im Wind erbebte.

Alles mit dem Sommer hinweggerafft,

auch unsere Hände, einander in Haft.

One more translation of my own. It’s summer. It’s over. Odysseas Elytis (Nobel prize for literature 1979), The Summer Has Taken It All away, from the poetry collection The Rhos of Eros (1973):

THE SUMMER HAS TAKEN IT ALL AWAY

The summer has taken it all away,

Your windswept hair at the waves of the sea,

Our date at one, you and me.

The summer has taken it all away,

Your black eyes and the scarf to fit,

The little chapel, the candle we lit.

The summer has taken it all away,

Us, hand in hand, going astray.

The summer has taken it all away,

The half words, those which rather faded,

The boat sails, deteriorated.

From the spray of the foam and the algae

It took everything, as it were,

The oaths that trembled in the air.

The summer has taken it all away,

Us, hand in hand, going astray.
