Leonidas Pantelides, der sehr bekannt als Diplomat ist und genauso bekannt als Philosoph zu sein verdient, macht die Natur der Zeit durch González-Torres’ Installation Perfect Lovers deutlich. Die Zeit ist das gemeinsame Uhrticken und das Uhrticken auf dieselbe Sekunde. González-Torres wollte mit seiner Installation kein Sinnbild für die Zeit, sondern eines für die Liebe schaffen. Salopp ausgedrückt, reicht es nicht, wenn die Liebenden eine halbe Stunde nach dem Mittagessen Lust verspüren. Wenn sie zu verschiedenen Zeiten essen, finden sie nicht zueinander.

Irgendwann geraten die Uhren der Installation aus dem Rhythmus. So wie tatsächliche Liebhaber auch. Es gibt Tobi Wongs Replik der Installation von González-Torres, wo die Uhren mit der Atomuhr des US-amerikanischen Verteidigungsministeriums synchronisiert sind. Es gibt auch Cerith Wyn Evans’ Version für untreue Paare.

Leonidas P., der Freund, der Denker, hat Recht. Die Uhren sind sinnbildlich für die Zeit, nicht für die Liebe. Gleichzeitigkeit ist um so mehr garantiert, je mehr Uhren nebeneinander funktionieren. Leonidas Pantelides, a well-known diplomat who deserves at least equal fame as a philosopher, gladly uses González-Torres’s installation Perfect Lovers to explain the nature of time. Time is a pace of ticking, and the ticking of the same second. González-Torres‘s intention was to symbolise love, not time. A blunt example would be lust. Lovers may have it thirty minutes after lunch, but if they had lunch in different moments, they are not lovers of one another.

At some point, one of the clocks of the installation gets off the pace. Which is something that can happen between lovers too. Tobi Wong’s replica of González-Torres‘s installation is synchronised with the atomic clock of the US defense ministry. Cerith Wyn Evans made a version for unfaithful partners.

Leonidas P., the friend, the thinker, is right, you see. The more clocks you have, the more certain you can be for having the correct time. But I have my own concept-art installation, in fact a version of González-Torres‘s, to depict love. Here you are:
