Greta ist meine Tochter und sie sagt mit Sechzehn Sachen wie: “Eine Frau, die ihrem Herzen folgt, gilt als die schlimmste Person der Welt. Ein Mann, der das tut, wird gefeiert”. Sie guckt entsetzt dabei.
Joachim Triers Film Der schlimmste Mensch der Welt (nominiert für zwei Oscar) ist liebenswürdig genauso wie die Protagonistin, genauso wie die Rolle der Frau, die das Medizinstudium, anschließend das Psychologiestudium, anschließend mit Aksel, anschließend mit Eivind abbricht.
Nach der Filmvorführung habe ich noch nicht an Gretas Spruch gedacht. Erst nachts passierte das, als ich an Woody Allens Film Hannah und ihre Schwestern dachte, wo (natürlich!) der moralistische Unterton (“schlimmster Mensch” oder?) fehlt, da die Person, die dort ihrem Herzen folgt, Hannahs Ehemann ist, ein Mann – gespielt übrigens von Michael Caine.
Wer findet die moralistischen Untertöne nicht strange? Diese bestimmten, meine ich, gegenüber der Frau in einem bestimmten Kontext in einem 2021 gedrehten Film verglichen mit dem Fehlen solcher Untertöne gegenüber dem Mann im ähnlichen Kontext in einem 1986 gedrehten Film?
Nach der Filmvorführung die Diskussion im Kinosaal: “Sie hätte zu ihrem Boyfriend gehen sollen, sagen sollen, guck, ich habe mich in jemanden verliebt, kannst du mir helfen, mit dir darüber hinwegzukommen?”
So die Wortmeldung einer Frau aus dem Publikum…
Spießertum erstreckt sich offenbar über alle Ebenen des Daseins. Hier sind die Schichten mindestens drei. Die erste Ebene ist die offensichtliche: Die Fiktion wird als ein Dokumentarfilm angesehen und als ein Ansporn zur Beratungsrunde. Die zweite Ebene besteht in der Unfähigkeit zu erkennen, dass der Moralismus in einem Film nicht die Natur der Dinge widerspiegelt, sondern meistens die Sichtweise im Skript. Es gibt noch eine Schicht: Sie besteht darin, in den Individuen Diener von Allgemeinbegriffen wie “Schulklasse”, “Unistudium”, “Beziehung” zu sehen statt umgekehrt in den Allgemeinbegriffen Funktionen, deren Argumente die Individuen sind. Hier ist nicht nur Spießertum, sondern auch archaischer Kollektivismus zu erkennen.
Und ja, Frauen sind oft sehr spießige und orthodoxe Großinquisitoren, wenn andere Frauen das Thema sind.
Greta spricht alles in allem ein echtes Problem an, vergisst aber, dass es oft Frauen sind, die Impulsivität beim Mann feiern und bei der Frau ablehnen.
Gleichzeitig ist sie erst sechzehn. Etwas Geduld und ihr werdet Augen machen…
Momentan kann ich nur den Film empfehlen: Renate Reinsve als schlimmster Mensch der Welt. Regie von Joachim Trier.

My daughter Greta is sixteen and she says things like “If a woman follows her heart, then people say she’s the worst person in the world. If a man does so, he’s celebrated”. Highbrow!
I watched Joachim Trier’s Worst Person in the World (two Oscar nominations) and I loved it, and I liked the protagonist and her role as a woman who quits medicine for psychology, quits psychology for a guy named Aksel, breaks up with Aksel for a guy named Eivind, breaks up with Eivind – period…
And I thought of my daughter’s dictum later in the night when I had this reminiscence to Woody Allen’s Hannah and her Sisters, where, of course, the moralistic undertone (“worst person” huh?) is absent because the impulsive person who follows his heart there, is Hannah’s husband, a man – the role is played by Michael Caine.
Isn’t it strange to have moralistic undertones towards women concerning some issue in a film made in 2021 but none of a such towards men concerning the same issue in a film made in 1986?
After the performance, discussion on the film in the cinema. “She should go to her boyfriend and tell him, look, I fell in love with someone, can you help me get over it?”
The person who said that was a woman…
Now, there is some philistinism here on many levels: the obvious philistinism consists in looking at a work of fiction as if it were a documentary, and making moral judgments. The other is the inability to realise that moralism in films is given by those who made the film, to be mostly independent of the nature of things. And one more layer of philistinism consists in believing that individuals are there to serve general notions like: “school class”, “university studies”, “relationship” etc.; consists in failing to see that, on the contrary, it’s the general notions that are there to serve individual needs. But is this last layer only one of philistinism or is it also archaic collectivism?
And yes, women are often the harshest philistines and bishops of the inquisition when other women are the issue.
So, my daughter Greta addresses a real problem but she forgets to say that it’s women who celebrate men in love, women who condemn women in love.
Well, Greta is still only sixteen. Wait and see…
