Finally I’m done with the translation of Kavvadias’s famous “Fog”. It took me much time. I tried (and managed) to keep the metre and the rhyme. It was a difficult task because Kavvadias uses exotic rhythms that can include four unstressed syllables in a row, loan words, sailors’ sociolect. Exoticism is the idea.
Fog
Foggy is the weather since ’bout dusk. // There is no light coming from the lantern. // You reached me unexpected in a mind turn. // Wheeling on the bridge I was ‘n’ busque.
Bridewhite is your dress, wet, dripping, dear! // Pressing your wet hair strands does feel feltisch. // Thinking of far Port Pegasus where just fish // Fails the rain at this time of the year.
As it seems the heater is the hick // Who with feet on chains lies in wait for us. // Never ever look in swell at spreaders // When the waves are high; you will get sick.
While the boatswain curses rain and storm // Way from reaching some day Tocopilla. // In me I prefer to utter discontent // a periscope’s torpedo as my killer.
Leave me! You are for the land to be. // Unaware you came of what my need is. // Drawned since the night under the deep sea // Floating I am offshore the Hebrides.
