Nachdem sich die Philosophen jahrhundertelang in der Rolle des Entdeckers, nicht des Erfinders gefallen haben, ist die Zeit reif für die erste philosophische Erfindung der Weltgeschichte. Sie geht aufs Konto der Besucher meiner Philosophie-Ethik-Stunde. Es ist die Schere des Barbiers aus Russells Paradoxie, der nur die und all diejenigen rasiert, die sich nicht selber rasieren (d.h. wenn er sich nicht rasiert, dann rasiert er sich – und umgekehrt).

Die Schere ist unserem Barbier angemessen, denn sie muss ausgeschnitten werden, damit sie gebraucht wird, und sie muss gebraucht werden, um ausgeschnitten zu werden.

What you see above are the scissors of Russell’s barber, the man who shaves only and all those who don’t shave themselves and consequently shaves himself if and only if he doesn’t.

A student from my class constructed the scissors to fit to the needs of the legendary barber. You’ve cut off the scissors to use them if and only if you’ve used them to cut them off.

This is a premiere in the history of philosophy. For centuries now philosophers have discovered things but invented nothing – until my students managed to fruitfully make the step from philosophical discovery to philosophical invention.

(OK, I hope that the joke’s not too silly).
