So Flashar anno Weißichnichtmehr…

“Herr Gero, would you be fasting with us?”
Hey, guys, I don’t fast the orthodox way anymore, let alone…
Hellmuth Flashar, he was my professor 700 years ago (he was so disappointed to realise that it’s “Gerogiorgakis” and not “Georgiades”! He thought I was a grandson of the great Thrasybulos Georgiades, my idiom was Munich-like, my musical skills not bad…) used to say that, the Corpus Hippocraticum prescribes a non-substantial breakfast.
“Frankly” said he, “what else do the modern Greeks do? Just a cafedaki and a mandarinaki or sykalaki in the morning. Hippocratics, no?”
Long story short, I promised my Albanian, Kurdish, Somali boys and girls to fast their way – one single day. A secular, previously Tarkovskian and Dostoyevskyan keeps Ramadan. A Greek tries otherness and stays without food and drink from sunrise to sunset.
I knew how the “others” manage. They eat and drink much before the prohibition begins and also much after it’s over.
Breakfast was unbearable. I hated eating and I had to. Before sunrise. “Frankly” used Flashar to say. Really not a breakfast guy. Cafedaki, mandarinaki…
During lunch time the temptation was less than I thought. The grocery around the corner doesn’t have these spanakopitas any more.
In the afternoon. Train to Basel. Not hungry. Thirsty, yes. Strange, but not hungry. Breakfast wasn’t salty and this was the right thing. Sunset approaches.
Talking about sunset: a couple of days later the occidental Easter. On the plane to Athens.
After having tried three different kinds of fasting, I have to say that the target of catholics in fasting is abstinence, this of muslims is patience.
The Orthodox are special. Fourty days of a diet based on bryonia, beans, escargots, squid, oysters, a bit more alcohol and caviar than normal, no dairy products, no fish, no meat – this is a fasting according to the cycle of the ecosystem. The ecosystem being the Mediterranean, well, this has historical reasons and makes fasting the orthodox way absurd if you don’t live there. But it makes also the orthodox fasting a diet not primarily religious.
Low visibility over the archipelago these days is due to sand from Africa. Temperatures are absurd for the season. The religious influences are less than those of climate.
